| Objective:The aim of this study was to compare the analgesic efficacy of two local anesthetics, levobupivacaine and bupivacaine in the elderly undergoing TURP surgery.Methods:40 elderly patients (ASAâ… -â…¡) were prospectively randomised to receive hyperbaric mixture 2.5-3ml of 0.33% levobupivacaine (Group LB, n=20), or 0.33% bupivacaine (Group B, n=20) for spinal anaesthesia. We punctured at the L3-L4 interspace and injected 0.33% levobupivacaine or bupivacaine 2.5-3ml to the subarachnoid with the speed of 40s. We comparisoned of onset of sensory blockade, duration of sensory blockade, onset motor blockade, duration of motor blockade, maximum sensory block level, degree of maximum motor blockade. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded before anesthesia induction (baseline),5 min after administration,10 min after administration,15 min after administration,20 min after administration,30 min after administration,45 min after administration and at the end of operation. Adverse effects during the operation were recorded.Results:There were no significant differences in onset of sensory blockade,duration of sensory blockade, onset of motor blockade and maximum sensory block level between the groups (P> 0.05). In the degree of maximum motor blockade Group LB was fewer than Group B (P< 0. 05), the recovery time of motor block was shorter than Group B (P< 0.05). The change of MAP, HR and SPO2 were similar between two groups in the deferent time. All patients were recovered uneventfully and no severe adverse effects were found through out the whole procedures.Conclusion:CSEA with levobupivacaine was safe for elderly patients and effective undergoing TURP surgery. Levobupivacaine was good for action as early as possible after operation to prevent venothrombosis formation.
