Ojective:To study the risk factors and clinical features of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Method:The clinical findings, birth status, ways of treatment, and prognosis were retrospectively analyzed in 30 newborns suffering from NEC, who were medically treated in affiliated children's hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January 1st 2008 to December 31st 2009. Results:There were 23 preterm infants (76.7%) and 22 low birth weight infants (birth weight<2500g) (73.3%). The average gestation age and birth weight were 34.25±3.34 weeks and 2025.67±725.05 gram, respectively. Infants receiving breast feeding were only in 3 cases (11.1%). The average day of onset was 7.7.7±9.38, while onset in the first 14 days of life was seen in 27 cases (90.0%). The mainly clinical features were abdominal distention, diarrhea, hemafecia, feeding intolerance. The chief accompaniment or complication were sepsis, intestinal perforation and malformation of some organs. There were 23 infants with abnormality of leukocyte count (82.1%),15 infants with increased CRP (53.6%), while 8 infants with diminished of blood platelets count (28.6%). The average fasting time was 10.95±8.67 days. Beside conventional medical treatment,5 infants were received surgical intervention (16.7%). Finally,18 infants (60.0%) were cured (including those were improved), while 12 infants (40.4%) were died (including parents giving up). Conclusion:Diminishing premature delivery, actively controlling infection, breast feeding may be the major ways for the prevention of NEC. Once definite diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of NEC has been made, one should monitor the laboratorial index regularly and follow the development of disease. Active intervention, including surgical procedures may be necessary to prevent the possible complications.
