Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) modified Papineau technique for treating chronic osteomyelitis.Method:We retrospectively reviewed 7 patients who underwent VSD modified Papineau technique for chronic osteomyelitis.4 patients were open fractures, and 3 patients were closed fractures infected after internal fixation. The average follow-up duration was 5.1 months. The results were evaluated with infection control, the time of osteomyelitis and fracture union.Results:6 patients got infection control and bone defects union; 1 patient got refracture and refused further treatments. The avergage numbers of surgical time were 7.1 (5-13), and the average time from bone grafting to skingrafting was 24 days (8-31 days). The average treatment cycle was 2.4 month. Conclusion:Chronic osteomyelitis can be successfully treated by VSD modified Papineau technique. The modified Papineau technique has the advantage of shorter treatment cycle. It is an alternative option for the patients who are not suitable for flap transfer or who are not interested in flap transfer.
