| ObjectiveTo study the clinical features of pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) in our surgical ward.Subjects49 men and 22 women who developed PMC from June 2008 to June 2009.ResultsThe underlying diseases were as follows:gastric cancer (n=18), colon cancer (n=29), rectal cancer (n=22) and bowel obstruction (n=2). The mean age of patients was 67 years (range 39-78). In 62 cases PMC developed within 6 days of operation. All patients were treated with metronidazole and bacillus bifidus,11 plus vancomycin through a nasogastric tube or by oral.70 patients survived and 1 died.ConclusionsPatients who are given broad-spectrum antibiotics and whose gastric secretion is reduced are at high risk of PMC. Enteroscopy is still a main diagnostic method of PMC. CD culture and detection of A&B toxinum is the golden standard. Oral metronidazole and vancomycin is effective to PMC. Probiotics and montmorillonite powder have synergetic effects. In the surgical ward, early diagnosis, treatment and isolation are essential for patients with PMC. |
