Objective Research on the distribution regularity of TCM syndrome types and the relationships among TCM syndrome types, average age, course of disease, level of blood pressure, blood plasma high sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) and homocysteine (HCY) in inpatients with essential hypertension, in order to support objective evidence for TCM syndrome differentiation of hypertension, and to improve the clinical treatment effect of traditional Chinese medicine.MethodsAccording to "the Chinese herbal medicine clinical research guiding principles",662 inpatients with essential hypertension were categorized into four groups:hyperactivity of liver-fire group, hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency group, excessive damp-phlegm group and deficiency of both yin and yang group. Also, patients were categorized into three groups according to course of disease:< 1 year,1 year< Y<10 years and≥10 years. At the same time, they were categorized into three groups according to the blood pressure level standard of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003:1 level,2 level and 3 level. The level of blood plasma Hs-CRP was measured by means of immunoassay method and the level of blood plasma HCY was measured by means of enzymatic method. All Statistical data were analyzed with SPSS software version 14.0.Results①,The distribution ratio of TCM syndrome types was as follows:hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency>excessive damp-phlegm>deficiency of both yin and yang >hyperactivity of liver-fire.②,The average ages of four TCM syndrome type groups were statistically significant different(p<0.01), the average ages of hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency group, excessive damp-phlegm group and deficiency of both yin and yang group were all more than that of hyperactivity of liver-fire group (p<0.05), while there was no obvious difference among the three groups (p>0.05).③,The course of disease was statistically significant different in four TCM syndrome type groups(p<0.05),it was less than 10 years in hyperactivity of liver-fire group and excessive damp-phlegm group, while it was more than 10 years in hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency group and deficiency of both yin and yang group.④,The level of blood pressure also was statistically significant different in four groups (p<0.01), patients in hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency group and excessive damp-phlegm group were mainly 2,3-level of blood pressure, and it was mainly 1-level in deficiency of both yin and yang group, and blood pressure of hyperactivity of liver-fire group were relatively balanced distributed at all levels.⑤,The level of blood plasma Hs-CRP was statistically different in four TCM syndrome type groups (p<0.01), the level of blood plasma Hs-CRP in hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency group was obvious higher than other three groups (p<0.01), and the level of blood plasma Hs-CRP in hyperactivity of liver-fire and deficiency of both yin and yang was higher than that of excessive damp-phlegm, blood plasma Hs-CRP level of excessive damp-phlegm group was the lowest in four groups (p<0.05).⑥,The level of blood plasma HCY was statistically significant different in four TCM syndrome type groups (p<0.01), blood plasma HCY level of excessive damp-phlegm group was the highest (p<0.01), blood plasma HCY level of deficiency of both yin and yang group was higher than that of hyperactivity of liver-fire group (p<0.05).Conclusions①,Hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency and excessive damp-phlegm were the most common TCM syndrome type in inpatients with essential hypertension.②,Sthenic syndromes were more common in the early stage of essential hypertension, but in the advanced stage the deficiency or other mixed syndromes became more common.③,Course of disease in groups of hyperactivity of liver-fire and excessive damp-phlegm was relatively shorter than that in groups of hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency and deficiency of yin and yang.④,Level of blood pressure was higher in groups of hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency and excessive damp-phlegm, while it was lower in group of deficiency of both yin and yang, and it was relatively balanced in hyperactivity of liver-fire group.⑤,The level of blood plasma Hs-CRP may serve as a sensitive diagnosis indicator for hyperactivity of yang due to yin deficiency syndrome type.⑥,The level of blood plasma HCY and Hs-CRP may serve as a sensitive diagnosis indicator for excessive damp-phlegm syndrome type.
