| Objective The expression of the human papillomavirus (HPV) 16/18 in the hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) and associated cervical lymph nodes were examined, to determine the relationship between HPV and the development of HPSCC and the cervical lymph node metastases. Methods The evidence of HPV 16/18 DNA in the tumor tissues and lymph nodes of HPSCC was detected by hybridization in situ (ISH). Combining with patients, clinical data, we performed a retrospective analysis. Results 20 HPSCC cases were included, all of them were male. The median age was 53.0 years. The prevelence of HPV16/18 in tumor tissues of HPSCC was in 10.0%(2/20). In HPSCC cervical lymph node metases, the prevelence was in 8.3%(1/12). There was no HPV16/18 DNA detected in nomarl lymph node. All of the HPV16/18 positive cases were stage IV HPSCC patients, too. Conclusions HPV16/18 may have low prevelence in HPSCC. And the HPV16/18 positive mainly presented in stage IV HPSCC cases. |
