Objective:To discuss the correlation between Epstein-Barr virus infection and the occurrence an d development of invasive breast ductal carcinoma, and the expression of oncogene c-erbB-2.Method:We examined the expression of Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen-1 (EBNA-1) by employing immunohistochemistry (IHC)in breast cancer tissue, corresponding adjacent non cancerous tissues and benign hyperplasia. Then, EBNA-1 positive and negative cases were selected for analysis of the expression of c-erbB-2 by the same methodsResults:There were 24 cases EBNA-1 positive in 80 cases of breast carcinoma, the positive rate was 28.75%, and corresponding adjacent noncancerous tissues and benign hyperplasi a were negative for EBNA-1. There were obvious differences(x2=28.235 P<0.001,x2=6.336 P=0.012). Statistical analysis showed that there were no significant differences among ag e. histological grade.clinical stage and lymph node metastasis between the EBNA-1 positi ve and negative breast cancer cases, with P values 0.868,0.915,0.748,0.812 correspondingly. There were 24 cases positive for c-erbB-2 in the 24 cases of EBNA-1 positive breast ca rcinoma cases, the positive rate was 100%.However, there were 25cases positive for c-erb B-2 in the56 cases of EBNA-1 negative breast carcinomas. The expression of c-erbB-2 wa s higher in EBV positive breast carcinoma than those in EBV negative. There was obvio us difference(P<0.01)Conclusion:EBV infection has something to do with the development of breast cancer to some degree, but nothing to do with age, histological grade.clinical stage, and lymph node met astasis. And has certain relevance with the expression of the oncogene c-erbB-2.
