Objective: To observe the curative effect and adverse effects of sunitinib in the treatment of metastatic renaI cell carcinoma(mRCC).Methods: Eighteen patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma were enrolled from September 2008 to January 2011,13 male and 5 female patients,median age was 55 years(range from 26 to 83 years).All patients had prior nephrectomy,13 cases of clear-cell RCC, 5 cases of papillary RCC.All of the patients were given sunitinib at a dosage of either 50 mg daily(4 weeks on/2 weeks off) or 37.5mg daily continuously.The treatment lasted from 5 to 27 months.Objective response rate(0RR),progressive free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS) were evaluated,and adverse events were also observed.Results:According to Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors (RECIST),partial response could be evaluated in 3 patients and stable was found in another 11 patients.Only 3 patients were confirmed disease progression.The ORR was 17.6%with the disease control rate of 82.3%,However,the median PFS and OS were not yet available due to the short term follow up.During the treatment,the most common adverse events experienced by patients were hand-foot syndrome ,gastrointestinal tract reaction,change in hematology.All of adverse events were manageable and reversible.Most adverse events could be ameliorated by dose-adjustment and treatment interruption.Conclusion: Sunitinib as a single agent in the treatment for Chinese mRCC patient is efficient,and side effects were manageable,most patients in the treatment can tolerance.Further long-term follow-up and expanded samples should be expected to confirm the efficacy and safety of sunitinib.
