| Objective:To explore the changes of fasting serum Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) levels in Graves disease compared to controls, and its influence factors. Methods:Serum FGF21 levels were determined by ELISA in 65 Graves disease subjects and 43 healthy subjects. The Graves disease subjects were recruited from the outpatient of the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University. The healthy controls were enrolled from the epidemiological investigation. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumstance(WC), hip circumstance(HC), waist hip ratio (WHR), serum triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol(TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high sensitivity C-reactive protein(hsCRP), fasting blood sugar (FBS), free thyroxine (FT3), free triiodothyronine (FT4), thyrotrophin(TSH) and FGF21 levels were measured. Serum FGF21 levels between Graves disease patients and healthy controls were compared, and the influence factors of serum FGF21 were analyzed. Results:Compared with controls, serum FGF21 levels in Graves disease were significantly decreased (156.93(80.32-228.10) vs. 207.78(149.98-367.83), P=0.001).In healthy controls, serum FGF21 was correlated positively with age, TG, TC and LDL-C (P all<0.05). After adjusted for age and sex, serum FGF21 only correlated positively with TG (r=0.321, P=0.041). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that in healthy controls, age and TG were independent factors influencing serum FGF-21.In Graves disease patients, serum FGF21 was correlated positively with age, BMI and FT4(P<0.05). After adjusted for age, sex and BMI, serum FGF21 still correlated positively with FT4(r=0.279, P=0.028). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that in Graves disease patients, age and FT4 were independent factors influencing serum FGF-21 levels. Conclusions:Serum FGF21 levels in Graves disease are decreased. Age, blood lipid and thyroid function may influence serum FGF-21 levels. |
