Objective The current study was designed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of radiotherapy for local intracavitary encroachment prime type, local mucosa encroachment prime type and periphery encroachment prime type X-ray BaM patients with carcinoma of gastric cardia. Methods Analyzing the clinical data of 124 patients with carcinoma of gastric cardia from January 2005 to December 2009. The patients were divided into three groups refer to X-ray BaM Opacification and other imageology data, group A (39 patients): local intracavitary encroachment prime type, affection confine to cardia of stomach and X-ray BaM display obviously filling defect or niche sign in intracavitary; group B (48 patients): local mucosa encroachment prime type, affection confine to cardia of stomach, X-ray BaM display affection involve mucosa or tubal wall and no obviously filling defect or niche sign; group C (37 patients): periphery encroachment prime type, X-ray BaM display affection invade outside of cardia of stomach, such as hypomere esophagus or fundus gastricus, or CT display affection involve tissue of outside of tubal wall. The improved rates of obstruction symptoms, the improved rates of KPS, the diminished rates of tumor size and the survival rates after radiotherapy were summarized. Results Comparing the three groups of carcinoma of gastric cardia, the improved rate of obstruction symptoms were 76.9%(A), 83.3%(B), 91.9%(C), group A and group B were insignificantly (P>0.05). The improved rate of obstruction symptoms were higher in group C than group A and group B (P<0.05).Comparing the three groups of carcinoma of gastric cardia, the improved rates of KPS were 25.6%(A), 27.1%(B), 73%(C), group A and group B were insignificantly (P>0.05). The improved rate of KPS were higher in group C than group A and group B (P<0.05).Comparing the three groups of carcinoma of gastric cardia, the diminished rates of tumor size were 71.8%(A), 64.6%(B), 35.1%(C), group A and group B were insignificantly (P>0.05). The diminished rates of tumor size were higher in group A and group B than group C (P<0.05).Comparing the three groups of carcinoma of gastric cardia, the survival rates were higher in group A and group B than group C (P<0.05).Conclusions The group C are more effective than group A and group B in the improved rate of obstruction symptoms and KPS. The group A and group B are more effective than group C in the diminished rates of tumor size and the survival rates. The group A and group B are equally effective in the improved rate of obstruction symptoms and KPS. Also group A and group B are equally effective in the diminished rates of tumor size and the survival rates.
