In recent years, with more and more patients of chloasma, the work to prevent and cure chloasma is facing great pressure and challenges. In this research, toxicological and functional assessments of the preparation of tea polyphenols and aloin (TPAP) were systemically investigated according to "the Technical Standards for Testing and Assessment of Health Food".The main functional components of TPAP were tea polyphenols (24.81 %) and aloin (1.98 %). The results of hygienic test and stability of TPAP met the quality standards and the samples can be stored more than 24 months. The result of acute toxicity test was that the median lethal dose (LD50 ) of TPAP on SD rats and ICR mice was more than 21.50 g/kg body weight, which indicated TPAP was no toxicity. All the results of Ames test, bone marrow cell micronucleus test in mice and sperm abnormality test in mice were negative, which indicated there's no significant genetic toxicity of TPAP. The results of the 30-days-feeding study were negative. They showed that there was no significant influence on the weight gain, food utility ratio, hemogram index, blood biochemical index and viscera/body weight of the rats. The pathological slice examination did not show any abnormality on the main visceral organs of the rats administrated with TPAP of high dose. After a 30-day period test, the color and area of chloasma decreased significantly as compared with those examined before TPAP administration and control group, decreasing respectively 21.05±5.46% and 14.85±6.81%.And compared with the control group ,the total effects of TPAP on chloasma was significant (P<0.01 ) ,which indicted that TPAP had the function of eliminating chloasma. In a summary, there were not any evident toxic side effects and adverse reactions of TPAP.This research indicated TPAP was safe to be taken orally and it had the function of eliminanting chloasma.
