Objective:With the progress of Computer aided design, Computer aided manufacture, Computerized numerical control technology, Laser technology and Materials science, three dimensional reconstruction (3DR) and rapid prototyping (RP) technologies have been gradually penetrated into the medical field and changed the traditional diagnosis, operation programming, artificial manufacture. Besides, it can offer technical support for Surgery navigation system, Analog simulation and so on.Nowadays, the development of CT image processing and rebuilding technology of three dimension tissue model make it easy to get the accurate human tissue model with complex contour. Basing on three dimension CAD model, RP technology can manufacture complex concrete model with high precision.3DR and RP technologies have been one of the important parts of modern medicine, which has huge potential and utility value. The application of 3DR and RP especially on the skeletal trauma and reconstruction surgery can offer the preoperative simulation and the approach that assesses the effect reconstructive surgery for the fracture and bone abnormality. Methods:The study keys to evaluate the significance of 3DR and RP techniques in bone trauma and orthopedic surgery of bone deformity. The patients accepted spiral CT scanning before operations. The cross-section images were preserved in disc by DICOM pattern. And then in the basis of the two-dimensional images of spiral CT scanning, they were imported into personal computer (PC) through Mimics software. The steps of digital reconstruction in Mimics contained input and segmentation of images, reconstruction of interested portions, et al. After the steps, the digital 3DR image of the bone was achieved and it was output in STL pattern. And then a concrete model of the same bone, which was as equal to the real one, was made by photosensitive colophony using rapid prototyping machine. Subsequently, using X-ray, CT scanning images, three-dimensional concrete model of the patient, the operator can directly appraise the situation of the fracture or deformity and be guided on clinical diagnosis and classification, surgical planning and preoperative rehearsal. Results:Using 3D reconstruction and RP techniques, reasonable operation planning was designed, thus reducing operation time and blood loss and acquiring effective treatment in the case of displaced acetabular fractures (DAF) and posterior pelvic injury (PPI). Especially, a virtual mirror image technology was adopted in a case of right ankle joint deformity, resulting more accurate plane and angle of osteotomy. The orthopedic results were satisfied showing an accurate position. The function of right ankle joint basically was recovered. Conclusions:In the study, using Mimics software realized that the precise DICOM data transferred between spiral CT and PC, which greatly enlarges the applied value of the CT data. Particularly, Mimics software can select the valuable information of the bone data from the serial two-dimensional images of spiral CT, process the cross-section images and finish three dimensional reconstruction of the bone. The 3DR image can be viewed on a computer screen and can be rotated and viewed from multi-angles. Basing on it, a concrete model of the same bone, which is as equal to the real one, is made by using rapid prototyping machine.3-DR image and the concrete model can visually reflect the real condition of the fracture or the bone deformity, and help preoperative evaluation and surgical procedure designing, which offer convenient for defining the best surgical plan as well as improving the safety and accuracy of the operation. Besides, they can help the doctor who establishes personalized therapy for the patient, which offers a new method for curing the complex disease on the clinical orthopedics. At the same time, the doctors make it possible for the patient and folk to clearly realize the disease and know the surgical procedure. So the doctors can effectively promote the exchange with the patient and folk.
