A Pragmatic Study And Analysis Of Implied Meanings Of Character Utterances In Fortress Besieged

Literature delivers meaning and feeling through language. Literary language can also be approached through linguistic theories, which reveal the methods of language expression. As an excellent novel, Fortress Besieged has attracted great attention and it has been researched widely by people. However, the research circle has not paid attention to analyzes and appreciate Fortress Besieged from pragmatic angle.This thesis is to investigate and appreciate the implied meanings of character utterances in Fortress Besieged. Firstly, the paper summarizes the implied meanings of conversations in Fortress Besieged and divides them into five types of meanings from the pragmatic angle. They are referential meaning, social meaning, situational meaning, associative meaning and affective meaning.Chapter three is the main part of this thesis. This dissertation tries to analyze the approaches of the implied meanings in conversations with such pragmatic theories closely as the Indirect Speech-act Theory, the Cooperative Principle, the Face Theory and the Politeness Principle. Through analysis, we can find that people violate cooperative principle to express their real purpose indirectly to avoid the embarrassing situation and observe the Politeness Principle. However, sometimes implied meaning is also produced when people flout the Politeness Principle. implied meanings can't be expressed and understood without the special context. People can't grasp the implied meanings exactly in conversations if they don't depend on the specific context.Finally, this paper expounds the pragmatic function of the implied meanings of character utterances in Fortress Besieged. The implied meanings of works have the general functions of implied meanings in real world, such as creating humor, clever satirizing and euphemistic hint. Besides, as far as the literary works concerned, it enriches the figures'characters in Fortress Besieged and reveals the dominant theme of Fortress Besieged. Analyzing the implied meanings of character utterances in Fortress Besieged from pragmatic angle would help us deepen understanding of the central ideas in Fortress Besieged and appreciate the author's profound idea and supper talent.
