American poet Louise Gluck's works depict the author's courage with keen insight and profound criticism when facing fear, hardship and grief in the twentieth century. Winner of the Pulizter for poetry and virtually every other major poetry award and the U,S. poet laureate for 2003-2004, Gliick was deeply influenced by confessional and postconfessional poets and well acquainted with classical myths since her childhood. In her poetry, she is adepting at fusing intimate autobiograyhical details with mythic stories, and in doing so, she has invented an entirely new poetic form—the book-length poetic sequence. The collection of Vita Nova (1999) is such a book-length poetic sequence about lost love, emotional death and rebirth of self. It explores the poet's emergence from the despair and loneliness that plagued her for years after her husband had left her. After taking the reader through the trying recollections of depression and loss, the speaker survives the dark side of her life. She compares a woman in love to a "fishlike baby," sitting helplessly in a stroller with no control over his or her destination. She concludes that her old ideals about love and happiness must have been mere delusions, which creates mysteries and puzzles in her personal life that keep her in the dark for a long tome. Then, the poet emerges into her Vita Nova. The author hopes that people can learn from failure but not lost in failure with this poem. The thesis will analyze the poetry of Vita Nova in detail and then come to the study of how Gluck emerge from "death" to "rebirth" and the inner meaning of this collection. To expore Gluck's search for rebirth in Vita Nova, firstly this thesis will make a analysis of her poetic stytles and make a comprehensive study of the reasons, then analyze what contributes to Vita Nova and make a detailed study of how the poet comes to the rebirth of the soul when lost in the death of emotion for a long period. The three chapters that follow will deal with Gluck's search for rebirth in Vita Nova from three aspects. Chapter One:"Classical Myths in Louise Gluck's poetry", addresses the formation and development of Gluck's poetic styles to show the important role that mythic elements play in her poetry and then make a analysis of her poetic stytles and make a comprehensive study of the reasons. Chapter Two is devoted to the study of Gluck's feelings when facing a failed marriage, and then make a comprehensive study of how the poet come to the rebirth of the soul when lost in the death of emotion for a long period. Chapter Three:based on the study of the two chapters above, Chapter Three concentrates on the study of the significance and value of Louise Gluck's Vita Nova to the postconfessional lyric and to the society. On the one hand, Gluck's book-length poetic sequence is a great contribution to the development of the postconfessional lyric, which serves a new direction for the postconfessional lyric; on the other hand, Gluck severely attacks the male-dominated society and the oppresion that men have done to women, but also she accuses women themselves for their over-indepence on males. Gluck's criticism of patriarchal cultute shows her great concern, and also helplessness to America society. With this volume of poetry, Gluck hopes that women can be positive when facing and dealing with a failed relationship or a failed marriage, but not lost in sorrow without ending. They should change their attitudes about marriage and face the future life positively.
