A Study On Chen Zilong's Poems

Chen Zilong was an important poet in the poety history of Ming Dynasty. He continued to restore ancient ways after"the fomer senven poets"and"the latter seven poets", the pioneers of the doctrine of"back to the ancients"in the mid-period of Ming Dynasty, exerting important influence on the end of Ming Dynasty. His poems formed a moving and tragic style on the turbulent background of times, attracking to people'attention. Returning to the ancients was the main trend of the Ming Dynasty's poetry creation. He was one of the key links of the poetry history in the Ming Dynasty, and was called to be"the rear guard of Ming Dynasty poets". This graduation thesis studies Chen Zilong'poems specially, including five parts—his lifetime , his ideas guiding creation in literature, his poems'content, his poems'artistic quality and his influence.The first part introduces Chen Zilong'lifetime and the background characteristic of times. This chapter detailly shows his personal story and the social situation at that time. The special background affected his creation deeply. This chapter emphatically explounds the relation between his poethy creation and the historical background.The second part disgusses Chen Zilong's ideas guiding creation poems, from two different angles, one is his inheritance to the back-to-the-ancients ideology, the other is his development to the traditional poetry thinking. I explore the source and course of his thought , in order to grasp the essence. To expond the first point, I compare his poetry thought to the pioneers of the doctrine of"back to the ancients"such as Li Mengyang, He Jingming, Li Panlong and Wang Shizhen. In addition, I analyse his personal exploration. To expound the second point, I analyse the influence of traditional poetry thinking to him and his development to it.The third part analyses the content of Chen Zilong's poems. This chapter gives first place to his three kinds of poems—that describe scenery, that express the thoughts and feelings, and that wrote for friends, and emphasizes the relation between his poems and the the turbulent background of the end of Ming Dynasty, giving prominence to his realism. Chen Zilong'poems relected comprehensive social reality, and were filled with realistic spirit .They had epic'quality and style and high ideological content.The fourth part dissects the artistic quality of Chen Zilong'poems. This chapter analyses Chen Zilong'poems from three angles, that is the artistic style, the types and the writing technique. The first section analyses the artical style of his poems. I summarize it from two aspects, one is melancholy ,which is the speciality of the artistic conception; the other is flowery, which is the characteristic of language. These two factors supplement each other and bring out the best in each other, making his poems present a strong individuality. The second section dissects every type of his poems, and expounds the creating method and the artistry. The third section analyses the artical technique of Chen Zilong's poems, including four traits. The first one is be skilled in using literature quotation, the second is be good at transforming verses, the third is be original in conception, the fourth is be adept in antithesis. I analyse them associating his poems at large. This chapter excavates his poethy works deeply.The fifth part expounds the status and influence of Chen Zilong in the poetry history. To fix his position in the poetry history , I analyse it from the angle of poetry development, and start with the inheritance relationship of the back-to-the-ancients faction. Meanwhile, I affirm his achievements of correcting the atmosphere of the poetic circles. To expound his influence on the poetic history, I put forward two aspects. One is his influence on temporal poetic circles, the other is his influence on later ages, especially on the early years of Qing Dynasty.
