On Intertextuality Of The English Version Of Wolf Totem

This thesis aims at applying the theory of intertextuality to literary translation studies, and explores the scale of intertextual signals as well as the specific translation of intertextual signals in modern literary translation.Intertextuality, a theory introduced by French semiotician Julia Kristeva in the 1960s, refers to the interrelationship between texts. It originates from semiotics and later is widely applied in literary criticism. The theory of intertextuality emphasizes text encoding and decoding. Literary translation is a process of text deconstruction and construction in its nature. Therefore, literary translation could provide a view of both theoretical and practical insights from the perspective of intertextuality. Basil Hatim and Ian Mason have formally introduced the theory of intertextuality into translation studies in their cooperative work Discourse and Translation.Lang Tuteng, a novel by Jiang Rong, has been translated into 26 languages including English, French, Italian, etc. The English version Wolf Totem, translated by Professor Howard Goldblatt, who is acclaimed as the most important translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature, has won the first Man Asian Literary Prize. A large number of intertextual signals embodying cultural connotations and regional characteristics contain in this novel. The author makes a detailed analysis of the way Goldblatt dealing with these signals in the process of translating, so as to explore the features of intertextual signals and the theoretical translation strategies.This thesis attempts to theoretically search for the relation between intertextuality and translation studies, and probes into how to transfer intertextual signals in practice. Intertextuality is related to the context of situation and the translation strategy of intertextual signals are also analyzed. In conclusion, the thesis declares that intertextuality provides translation a new perspective to study in both theory and practice. It is also hoped to provide a new perspective to the study of Wolf Totem.
