| This thesis aims at investigating the question of translator's style in literary translation by a quantitative approach instead of a qualitative one. In the field of translation studies, style is usually investigated and compared with that of the original writing. Little or no attention has been paid so far to the research of the style of a translator or a group of translators. Translation studies are a field which is hard to quantize. This thesis intends to analyze the application of textual cohesion devices in the three unabridged English versions of Chung-yung with the help of AntConc 3.2.1w. It also attempts to quantize the comparative study by corpus-based analysis, and explicit features and implicit cohesive devices within the three versions have been discussed respectively. Under the guidance of linguistic study on a micro bases, further analysis has been made to each translator–Gu Hongming, James Legge and Charles Muller, with translation motivation and culture backgrounds taken into consideration. Finally, no matter what the result is, the present thesis is by no means oriented to judge the quality of the translations under discussion, but tries to discuss some questions about translator's style from an empirical perspective. |
