On The Language Meme In Graduate Theses Of English Major

Memes are the unit of cultural information, which play an important role in the evolution of language. Because of the memes' replication and transmission, the database of language has greatly enriched. Memetics helps perfect the rules of language evolution and provides a new sight into the academic writing.Graduate thesis writing is not an easy task for Chinese students. It has its own linguistic features. From the perspective of memetics, this thesis is intended to make an analysis into graduate thesis in English major. Based on the macro-structure and micro-structure aspects, the present study attempts to find out the linguistic memes in graduate thesis. Thus some enlightenment can be obtained on the writing of graduate thesis.In this study, qualitative approach is adopted. The corpus of the study consists of 50 excellent graduate theses selected randomly from the Chinese Journal Net. All of the theses are from English major. While in this process, numbers and statistics will be applied to indicate the frequencies and prove the significance of memes.After a detailed analysis of data, it is found that various language memes are in use of the graduate theses. The power of memes lies in different sections throughout the whole thesis, which can give the reader or audience some valuable guidance on thesis writing and produces effective graduate thesis.
