| Translation is a cross-language, cross-social, special cultural activity. It is a comprehensive competence in language use. According to Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language, there is no task more complex than translation. Translators not only need to know their source language well; they must also have a thorough understanding of the field of knowledge covered by the source text, and of any social, cultural, or emotional connotations that need to be specified in the target language if the intended effect is to be conveyed. Nowadays, with the quick development of economic globalization and ever-increasing exchanges among countries, the competent translators are in great demand. As the major force of potential translation professionals, English majors at the tertiary level need effective training to become competent translators. Accordingly, an in-depth study of translation strategies is of great help to the promotion of English majors' qualifications in translation.The thesis focuses on the study of the translation strategies on the basis of equivalent theory. It first gives a brief account of previous studies on translation equivalence, on which a theoretical framework is established. With the guidance of Mona Baker's theory of translation equivalence, a case study on translation of TEM8 (2010) is conducted, which expounds on "equivalences" at word, above word, grammatical, textual and pragmatic level-five different levels through a great number of samples. In order to better understanding students'performance in translation, an error analysis is made in the thesis. And finally, within the framework of translation equivalence theory and the study of error analysis, the thesis puts forward three suggestions to develop students'translation strategies:increase awareness of translation theories, of differences between Chinese and of competence in translation.As Effective translator training depends largely on the quality of translation teaching, a study of translation teaching for English majors is also of great importance to the translation strategy training. Through using some translation techniques, such as amplification, omission, conversion and inversion, to deal with the non-equivalence at word level, sentence level, textual and pragmatic level, translators can achieve equivqlence in their translation with the guidance of the the equivalence theory. At the same time, the thesis emphasizes that to make students more enthusiastic about translation and improve students'ability in dictionary use in translation teaching will greatly benefit students in translation strategy training. |
