| Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), as a new branch of modern linguistics, was developed as a theoretical framework of discourse analysis by Critical Linguists with the convergence of the approaches of Fairclough and Van Dijk in the 1970s and early 1980s. CDA approach has the mass discourses and other non-literary discourses as its major concerns. News report is one of its important targets. CDA approach is intended to reveal the relationship between news discourse and its socio-ideological contents underlying the production of the news discourse. The present research aims to develop a new analysis model of economy news discourse. Adopting CDA approach, the thesis consists of five parts.Chapter One is an introduction to the research background and interprets why and how the research is conducted. Chapter Two presents a review of theoretical foundations and the previous CDA researches on news discourses at home and abroad as well as the unique language features of economy news. Chapter Three is an introduction to relevant theory foundations: Halliday's System Function Grammar, Fairclough's three-dimensional model and Harold Lasswell's theory on the process of communication. Based on the theoretical foundations, a new CDA analysis model is constructed. Chapter Four adopts the new analytical model to examine and reveal the relationship between economy news discourses and ideology. The last part is the conclusion. The whole analysis procedure is divided into three stages:description, interpretation and explanation. Firstly, at the description stage, the language features of discourses are analyzed based on transitivity and modality from Halliday's System Function Grammar. Secondly, in terms of interpretation, the present research analyzes the producing process of economy news discourses from the perspective of intertextuality as well as the method of content analysis in communication theory. Finally, the present research discloses ideology embedded in economy news discourses and as social practices, explains the relationship between discourse structure and social structure. The present research demonstrates that although the economy news is highlighted as being objective and neutralized, it is inevitably affected by ideology. On one hand, the present research develops a new CDA analysis model of economy news discourses and presents how to apply it. On the other hand, the present research is helpful for readers to know about CDA analysis approaches and improve their capability of discourse analysis and reading. |
