Beethoven's thirty-two piano sonatas, especially the five created in later period, played an important role in the history of classic music. Most of the domestic and international researches on Beethoven's piano sonatas focus on the ones in his earlier and middle period, while few on the later ones. The only researches mainly deconstruct the sonatas from writing style, works analysis, spiritual connotation or performance skills and rarely from the training of playing skills.Based on the research on Beethoven and his piano sonatas, this paper emphasizes the playing skills of the five piano sonatas produced in later period. The author aims to help players deal with the difficulties when they are playing the five sonatas. The paper is divided into four parts:Taking society background, health condition and thought changes into consideration, chapter I analyzes the cause of the creating style in Beethoven's later period. In addition, it summarizes the skill features of the five sonatas, aimed to establish theoretical foundation for the analysis of performing skills when playing them.In view of the traditional technical issues and some issues with characters of later period, chapter II put forwards solutions to the playing of the five piano sonatas. The solutions are based on the Cortot's classification of piano sonatas according to difficulty.Chapter III analyzes the speed and intensity expression markings, which were innovated in Beethoven's later period. In order to express the connotation of music, we should pay attention to the speed and intensity of the sonata, as well as other technical difficulties. Speed and intensity are important factors that can interpret the connotation of Beethoven's piano sonatas.Chapter IV briefly compares the transcription and video data of Beethoven's piano sonatas. The first step to play his sonatas is to choose a proper version. Research on its versions can help us distinguish between different composers'intention or their guidance notes. With this, we can abide by the composer's intention better, and make our performance close to the composer's music style.
