D. H. Lawrence's philosophy is unique. While his contemporaries are hailing the capitalist society, Lawrence highly praises for the freedom of individuals. His unflinching faith in the decency of human nature, his advocacy of individual freedom, and his rejection of authority all reflect the principal features of anarchism. This thesis stresses how these anarchistic ideas are represented in his three major novels. This thesis consists of five parts. The introduction, after the literature review about the anarchistic research on Lawrence's novels, presents the theory of anarchism and discusses thereafter the origin and expression of Lawrence's anarchist thoughts, establishing the theoretical framework for the following textual analysis.Chapter One focuses on how Lawrence illustrates the decency of human nature. particularly his notions like:"Men are not bad, when they are free" and it is "Prison that makes men bad". In other words, men are moral by nature while only becoming violent and immoral when their instincts are repressed.Chapter Two examines how Lawrence looks at the anarchistic principle that freedom entails the obedience to the natural law and the freedom of all members. Lawrence believes that an individual cannot truly be free until the individuals surrounding him (or her) are equally free. He emphasizes through his portrayal of male-female relationships that they should preserve their own individuality.Chapter Three deals with how Lawrence expresses his rejection of authority through the subjects of industrialization, war, and marriage, which are the variations of the mechanism of external authority. Conclusion holds that anarchism does play an essential role in Lawrence's political philosophy and hence provides a crucial context to make a better understanding of his work.
