Wine idioms are the accumulation of wine culture in languages. From the perspectives of social linguistics, statistical induction, philology methodology and empirical analysis, this thesis focuses on the study of wine idioms. Wine idioms are sorted, classified and traced to the sources in this article. Some language examples in documents are analyzed. The purpose is to find out the rich traditional cultural spirits in wine idioms and to study their cultural heritage and development in the future.The major viewpoints of this essay are as follows. Firstly, the study of wine idioms has been focusing on its collection, classification, origin and development up to now. There has been very little systematic research on its cultural spirits. Secondly, the cultural spirits that wine idioms reflect are based on the positive value orientation of self-cultivation, family harmony, state governing and world peace. These expressions reflect the political thoughts, moral ethics, individual cultivation, enterprising spirits and life experiences of ancient and modern people which refract the soul of traditional Chinese culture. Thirdly, the establishing and developing of wine idioms are a metabolic process. Most of the accumulated idioms are of spiritual connotation. They have shortened the distance between ancient people and modern ones. There are four parts in this dissertation. The first part introduces the classification, explanation of their naming, brewing, drinking and containing. The second part traces wine idioms to the source and suggests some different opinions about some derivation in idiom dictionaries. The third part shows the cultural background of wine idioms by analyzing the background of their historical legends. The fourth part covers the background analysis of original wine idioms and summarizes the using of wine idioms of the later generations.We should study wine idioms with historic perspectives and modern spirits. The purpose is to retain, develop and heritage the splendid traditional Chinese legacy.
