| Facing the troubles brought by the war and industrial civilization, Lawrence proposed to set up harmonious relationships between man and nature, and between man and man to help human race to find a new way. We could find the harmonious concept through Lawrence's all works, which coincided with the views of Ecofeminists. They argued that the dominations of nature and women were from the same origin and followed the same pattern constructed in the male-centered stereotype. Ecofeminists advocated to unite feminism with ecology, because they had the same goal, that was against the male-centered culture. This article is to talk about Lawrence "harmonious theory" from perspective of Ecofeminism. Lawrence supported to keep close contact between man and nature. In Rainbow, the author came to realize the disadvantage of industrial civilization. In Women in Love, Lawrence chose "Gerald" as the representative of mechanism. He was physically strong and healthy, but mentally void. At last, he not only lost his lover, but also died which exposed the destruction of mechanical civilization to human nature. In Lady Chatterley's Lover, Lawrence chose "Clifford" as the representative of mechanism. Compared with Gerald, he was distorted in spirit and even paralyzed in body, which made the utmost criticism of mechanical civilization, what's more, in these three works, there were the "Streaking Scene", which indicated the harmonious relationship between man and nature. As for the harmonious relationship between man and man, Lawrence had original ideas, including the relations between men and women, and between men and men. As for the relations between men and women, Lawrence proposed the "Star-Equilibrium" concept which advocated the harmony between men and women. They were not only mutually dependent, but also independent. Lawrence encouraged to keep balance and harmony in spirit and body between men and women. In Lawrence's times, women were the subsidiary of men. Lawrence showed his profound sympathy and support for women, so he supported the liberation of women, which was showed in the various images of women created by him. As for sex, Lawrence argued that sex was not a dirty, but pure necessity. As to women, they also had the same rights for sex just like men, which was reflected in Lady Chatterley's Lover. As for the way to do with the relation between men and women, Lawrence criticized the prevailing "over rationality" which made people become too rigid and lose vitality of life. Lawrence argued that human race should deal with relations between men and women sensually. In addition, as to the way to deal with the relationship for the same sexes, he thought that it was necessary and complementary to have the eternal relations between men and men which was another love. Thus Lawrence's philosophy is a whole system whose purpose is to liberate man, help them to go back to nature and attain the vitality of life again. |
