| Proof of folk vocabulary is a proverb dictionary written by Hao Yixing, a scholar of the Qing Dynasty. With quantities of record of colloquial words, substantives and a relevant study on Chinese character grapheme, the book is of corpus and exegesis value in studying modern Chinese vocabulary. What's more, a study on the colloquial words of this book can make supplements and amendments to contemporary dictionaries. Selecting the words of the Proof of folk vocabulary as research object, this thesis mainly studied the folk style reflected in the colloquial words of that time and its value and impact for the later dictionaries compilation on lexicographical aspect.With Proof of folk vocabulary as research object, this thesis is generally divided into six parts. Chapter One introduces the life of the author, the contents and editions of Proof of folk vocabulary, the value of this book in studying the history of Chinese language, and the present study status of the book. Chapter Two discusses the lexicographical format of Proof of folk vocabulary. Chapter three discusses the vocabulary profiles and the features of explained words of Proof of folk vocabulary. From the view of folk custom linguistic, Chapter Four analyses the custom of that time, medical and dietary custom included. Chapter Five indicates the value of Proof of folk vocabulary in supplementing and amending the Great Dictionary of Chinese Vocabulary from several aspects, such as the lateness of citations, the insufficiency of citations, the deficiency of meanings, and issues about doublets, etc. Chapter Six argues the inadequacies of Proof of folk vocabulary from the view of words explanations, citation and examples, and item-establishment. |
