Teachers, students and teaching materials compose the basic factors of teaching link. Whether we must teach according to the materials or the students, and how we should deal with the relationship among these three factors is continuously the topic which we try to explore and examine. As the spreading of college English teaching reform, research on the graded English teaching mode, which is based on autonomous learning theory and students centered, is becoming an important subject and getting more and more mature. Autonomous learning is one kind of study mode that the learners, under the overall control and the teachers' instruction, set up their own learning target, choose their own learning strategy and accomplish certain task positively with the help of the educational resources. This is an effective learning style which can not only exert learner's individuality and motivation but also cultivate learner's interest in learning and learning quality as well.Since 1970s, autonomous learning has become more and more important in our teaching process. Autonomous learning means students being responsible for their own learning, which is the capacity that students must acquire in student-centered class teaching. Autonomous learning suggests a brand-new teaching concept that students are not at the same levels and the educators must adopt different teaching methods. They are not machines which only receive knowledge without thinking, but beings who have their own ideas, thinkings, and emotions. And the colleges must also change their traditional teaching mode to adjust themselves to the new era by making the students autonomous learners.The purpose of the research is to identify whether the graded English teaching mode, centered on learners participating into more teaching process, will improve the students' autonomous learning ability, and their comprehensive application ability or not, which is very useful to exert teachers' roles as guiders, organizers and helpers.This research, from the view of teaching practice, analyzes the necessity and possibility of improving the students' learning autonomy in the circumstance of graded English teaching mode. The target of college English teaching must be student-centered in which students can utilize internet technology to decide on appropriate learning content and methods and consequently to improve their comprehensive application ability.The research, which collected data through observation, questionnaire, interview, test and case study, probes the ways that help students to develop some autonomous learning methods and improve their learning interest, which is based on related theoretical knowledge and the current English teaching practice in hope for providing some evidence and proof for college English teaching.The research, which is directed by College English Curriculum Requirements, examines the graded English teaching mode and individual autonomous learning ability. From the view of Humanism which emphasizes individualism, accomplishment and potential, with the help of previous theoretical research and comparison among motive and individual difference, the research, to a degree, enriches the content of research on learning personality and teaching mode. In the circumstance of English teaching reform, this experiment is significant which will not only boost the reform, improve the students' learning efficiency, and bring up integrated and applied talented persons, but also furnish guidance for the teaching and learning of some other subjects.The research had lasted one and half a year through practical classroom teaching in Wuhan University of Technology and found out that an effective teaching method was very useful to cultivate the students'autonomous learning ability. And graded English teaching mode is the appropriate mode which uses different subjects and different teaching methods to teach students according to their different levels. This teaching reform can immensely stimulate the students' interest in learning, in which different students can set their different goals and adopt different language learning strategy. As a result they can make respective progress.The main aim of education is to empower learners'autonomy with the ability of learning how to learn. Students benefit a lot from the graded English teaching mode. They enhance the effect of learning. In becoming actively involved in the process of learning, the students set his or her own objectives and by working independently of the teachers both inside and outside the classroom, they realize a sense of autonomy in the environment of graded teaching mode.The research about graded English teaching and autonomous learning ability is very significant for improving current English learning phenomenon in the era when English is becoming more and more important while English teaching less and less effective. Also the research is likely to pave the way for future similar experiments on teaching mode.Autonomous learning adapts itself to the educational need of modern English teaching, with the learners becoming the masters of learning. This is the important historic task facing our English teaching reform. The development of learners' autonomous learning ability is the key to our English reform in college.
