College English Curriculum Requirements (2003) pointed out that the modern English teaching should be based on computer and web. Under this background, organized by Ministry of Education of China, Higher Education Press developed the web-based autonomous language learning system-EnglishXP Learning System. Till now, there are few papers reported concerning the empirical study on its listening effects. Therefore, instructed by the behaviorist learning theory, the cognitive learning theory and the constructivist learning theory, this dissertation intends to demonstrate the effects of listening on Chinese non-English majors via the learning system, through the quantitative analysis of the experimental data and the feedback of the questionnaires. There were 294 students from Lanzhou Commercial College involved in the 16-week-long experiment as the subjects. After the experiment, through the data analyses via SPSS 13, the author finds:to the students of Higher-level and Mid-level in the experimental group, the differencies of the improvement of their listening ability are not significant, which are even less than that of the control group. While to the students of Lower-level in the experimental group, their scores of the posttest are even lower than those of their pretest. It indicates that the aid from EnglishXP Learning System to improve the students'listening ability is not remarkable. According to the calculation of the total units the students in the experimental group have finished, the author finds the students of Higher-level and Mid-level finished more units than those of Lower-level. And through the analyses and the feedback from the questionnaires, the author finds that most students, especially those from Mid-level and Lower-level, prefer to adopt this system to improve their listening ability. But for the students of Higher-level, they hold a less active attitude towards the learning system. To sum up, the results of this empirical study indicate that the differences between learning through EnglishXP Learning System and learning in trational classrooms to develop students'listening ability are not remarkably significant, but the learning system can bring improvement into the students'interest in listening.
