Being the blend of traditional and modern cultural facets as well as the mixture of both written and spoken languages, Chinese idioms have become increasingly important for the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. As a Vietnamese, I am genuinely aware of the situation Vietnamese students studying Chinese idioms. Unfortunately, there are not many studies covering this subject. Thus I want to conduct this study analyzing the errors of Vietnamese students when they use Chinese idioms at intermediate and advanced level. This study contains six chapters:Chapter 1: The intention and significance of the subject and introducing existing studies of Vietnamese and Chinese researchers.Chapter 2: Discuss the usage and importance of Chinese idioms in instructional materials of Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language.Chapter 3: Based on previous studies, analyze the characteristics of idioms, mainly focusing on origin, meaning and grammar.Chapter 4: Examine the situation of Vietnamese students using idioms at intermediate and advanced level. Analyze the survey observing the usage of 30 idioms to find out the preliminary result.Chapter 5: Analyze errors of students using idioms including grammar, vocabulary, usage errors. Subsequently examine the causes of these errors. The effects of first language, study environment and education methods could be the main causes.Chapter 6: Suggestions toward teaching and studying methods in learning Chinese idioms at intermediate and advanced level.
