In recent years, stylistics has advanced rapidly due to its objectivity, and various stylistic schools come into being. Based on the perspective of Functional Stylistics, this thesis reconstructs a text cohesive pattern typically for poetic-analysis and approves its applicability through a practical analysis of the famous poem of Ode to the West Wind, composed by Percy Bysshe Shelley, an outstanding English poet in the 19th century. This thesis adopts the methodology of theory elaboration and case study. The first two chapters introduce Shelley's life histories and the characteristics of his works, and generally review the recent studies on the poem Ode to the West Wind. The third chapter is the theoretical basis of the whole thesis. The writer presents the development of text cohesion first, including the cohesive theories of the British linguists Halliday and Hasan, as well as the studies of cohesion from some Chinese scholars– Hu Zhuanglin, Zhang Delu, and Yu Xueyong. After that, a new cohesive pattern for poetic-analysis is reconstructed from the theories previously discussed. Then, in the next two chapters, the external and internal cohesive features of the poem Ode to the West Wind are fully investigated. After the investigation, the writer finds that the new constructed text cohesive pattern is beneficial for the objective and systematic study of poems. Furthermore, through the practical analysis of the poem Ode to the West Wind, the writer discovers the affluent and distinctive cohesive features the poem bears, and the meanings as well. The significance of the study lies in the reconstruction of a cohesive pattern for poetic-analysis from the perspective of Functional Stylistics, and also the systematic application of the new pattern in the whole poem of Ode to the West Wind for the first time, helping the readers understand more comprehensively the cohesive characteristics and the theme of the poem and appreciate the aesthetic value of the poem.
