English listening teaching has gained more and more attention in language development. However, in comparison with the leading universities, the hardware devices of vocationalcolleges still lag behind and many problems exist in listening courses. In English listeningteaching of vocational colleges, most of the teachers feel that listening courses can hardlyattract students'interest. The main reason is that many vocational college teachers stillcontinuously use traditional teaching mode which regards listening as a passive process andput emphasis on the improvement of linguistic knowledge, such as, phonetic knowledge, lexical points, grammatical structures, sentence patterns and so on. Teachers usually firstinterpret the new words, play the tape, let the students do the exercises and finally check theanswers. It is this kind of obsolete teaching mode that seriously affects college students'development of listening competence. As for the problems existing in vocational colleges, it gets very necessary for theresearchers to explore a logic and scientific English listening teaching mode. Schema theoryemphasizes that learners'cognition and comprehension are closely related to previouslyacquired knowledge. Therefore, on the basis of literature review, a framework ofschemata-based English listening teaching is designed, and an empirical study is undertaken. Two classes are selected from Qingdao Harbor College as the study objects, one as thecontrolled group taught with the traditional teaching method; the other as the experimentalgroup instructed with schemata-based listening teaching mode. Tests and interviews areadopted in the study. The pre-test is carried out in the two classes and the post-test isconducted after a whole semester's teaching and learning activities. All the collected data isanalyzed by SPSS. The test results demonstrate that students'listening scores in theexperimental class are significantly higher than those of the controlled class. This proves thatschemata-based English listening teaching mode can improve students'listening abilityfeasibly and effectively. The interviews indicate that the vocational students master somelistening skills under the guidance of schema theory and promote students'learning positivity. It is expected that the research can bring some inspirations for English listening teaching invocational colleges.
