This thesis is a study of Xiao Qian as a translator. Specifically it systematically examines both his translation practice and views on translation.Xiao Qian is a prolific writer, famous journalist, as well as a great translator in the 20th century. As a master of both Chinese and English, he devoted himself to translation for 68 years and made great contribution to cultural exchanges between China and the West. The whole paper is divided into six parts. Chapter One is an introduction,in which the author probes into the present situation of the studies on Xiao Qian, and analyzes the achievement and the problems in it. Furthermore, the objectives, the significance and the brief outline of the thesis are stated. Chapter Two first introduces Xiao Qian's life experience and his translation achievements, and then gives a detail review of his translation career, which consists of four periods. Chapter Three uses Xiao Qian's three Chinese-English translations to study his strategies and style in translation. Chapter Four analyzes Xiao Qian's English-Chinese translation practice ---Tom Jones, a foundling and Ulysses to study his translation purpose, attitude, source text choice, principle on one hand, to examine his translation strategy and style of language on the other hand. Chapter Five studies Xiao Qian's views on translation according to the research results above. Chapter Six serves as the conclusion of the whole thesis.The author expects that the systemic discussion will conclude some experience of being a successful translator to assist young people,and proposes to provide more evidence for researches on studies of Chinese translators.
