| English writing has played an important part in determining whether the student can have an access to the advanced information conveyed in English, to obtain the best educational resources at home. All these evidences show the importance of English writing as a foreign language in China. However the traditional practices of the writing assessment have inhibited the development of the students'writing ability and the English teachers who work hard cannot get undue reward. The rise of new assessment culture and new assessment paradigm---assessment for learning offer a new perspective to look at the English writing assessment. New ways of assessment such as authentic assessment, performance assessment are seeking new assessment tool—rubric. Equipped with new assessment theory, rubric theory, English Curriculum Standard and the construct of English writing, the author develops an English writing rubric to assess the students'writing and apply it in writing practices for a semester in a foreign language school of Shanghai. It is testified to be of great help improve the students'writing.The thesis is developed in five parts. The first part is about the background, purpose and research questions of this research. The thesis is developed with these aspects,"The current English writing assessment practices in China","The development of English writing rubrics based on the'assessment for learning'","the application of the rubrics in English writing assessment". And the second part is about the theory basis for developing the English writing rubric. With the discussion of these theories, the framework for the criteria of the writing is clear. The third part is about the technical requirement of English writing rubric and the process of developing a rubric from the perspective of assessment for learning while the reliability of the rubric is further tested. The fourth part is about the application of English writing rubric from the perspective of assessment for learning. Finally the result of applying the rubric for a whole semester is concluded with a questionnaire of the experimental class. The result shows that the rubric can improve the students'writing.However, the research is limited due to the limited number of students and the school that is undertaken. Further studies are suggested on the application of the result for more schools and more provinces of China. |
