| Starting from 2003 till present day, 40 College English courses have been named as nationalélite courses by the Ministry of Education based on the criteria of teaching content, teaching faculty, teaching materials, teaching methods and teaching management of a particular university. Through 8 years'development, has the classroom teaching of national College Englishélite Course maintained its feature of"beingélite"? Put in another way, what does the classroom teaching of national College Englishélite Course look like? This is the issue that deserves in-depth exploration.The present study surveys 5 nationalélite course College English classes in a 211and 985-project university. By observing the classroom videos, this study conducts a comprehensive study on nationalélite course College English classes in terms of teaching content and teaching methods. In addition, comparison has been made between 2 nationalélite course College English classes and 2 College English normal classes. The study intends to improve the classroom teaching of the nationalélite course college English and ultimately to enhance the quality of College English teaching in China. Enlightened by teacher talk and Gu's classroom observation scheme, this investigation covers the following aspects: 1) material used; 2) attention to skill areas; 3) teaching procedures; 4) classroom activity organization; 5) quantity of teacher talk; 6) teachers'use of English; 7) teachers'questioning and 8) teachers'feedback. Through the analysis, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1) The nationalélite course College English is well-staffed with teachers with rich teaching experience; 2) It puts emphasis on productive skills and incorporates broader linguistic knowledge and skills; 3) It embraces the use of modern pedagogical technology and moves towards the student-centered teaching methodology; and 4) It is more interactive and provides students with rich target language input. |
