Wang Xilin is regarded as one of the Chinese composers with thesolidest knowledge foundation and deepest thinking. In Wang's works,tragic is one of most important aspect, which is embodied in his works ofdifferent genres, especially in symphonies.Symphonies have grandstructure, which is convenient for the embodiment of tragic; and alsophilosophical thinking can be embodied in symphonies more easily.Wang's symphonies run through his composing career, and reflects therevolution of his music works; what's more, his symphonies promote thedevelopment of contemporary Chinese symphonies. Besides symphonies,Wang has other styles of works which full of symphonic thinking andreceive an international high evaluation. Therefore, based on thesymphonies and other works, this thesis attempts to analyse the tragicstyle in composing and its reasons and effects.The thesis are divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, theanalysis of the melody, rhythm, structure, sound pieces, polyphonic andinstruments is conducted so that the creative techniques for tragic areexplored. Chapter two is devoted to the exploration of reason of the tragicin Wang's work with referent to the personal experience. Chapter threestudies the aesthetic features of the tragic, and then the aesthetic value ofthe tragic is summed up.
