During his short life he created many remarkable works, and formed his own unique artistic theories. However, the intentions and themes of his works have often been misunderstood, and as a result, he himself suffered a lot This paper intends to illustrate the main theme of The Rainbow and how the usage of writing techniques are serviceable to the best expression of the theme. The whole paper is divided into four parts. The first chapter is a brief introduction of Lawrence's main and common themes and his innovation in his writings. Art is too long for Lawrence; life too close. During his short period of life, Lawrence wants to create a new world, which is not tarnished by modern industrialism, through his brilliant works. He sings the praise of the nature instincts of life, and longs a perfect sexy relationship between sexes. So he is condemned for his bold portrayal of sex in his works. What Lawrence wants to do is not to give people sensual pleasure, but to recreate the natural aspects of life, and make people lead a happy and free life. The second chapter mainly illustrates the common theme of The Rainbow. In this book, Lawrence wants to tell us that the spiritual heritage for a high mode of life, and the core of life-the vitality will never be lost despite the invasion of the modern civilization. To search a high mode of life, the three generations of Brangwens first want to follow the changes of society, and to find a proper relationship with society. But the modern civilization gradually deprives the blithe aspects of life, and suppress the growth of personality of people. So their first step of search fails. Then the three generations of Brangwens take their search through the restoration relationship between people. In Lawrence's sense, the harmonious relationship between sexes can help people get rid of the damage of modern civilization. However the changes of society influence the inner life of people, and they become frustrated and insecurity. They don't know how to do and where to go , so they can not accept what is different from theirs. Even though in a marriage, they can not accept the otherness of their partner. So a harmonious relationship is hard to find. At last, the representative of the third generation, Ursula ,has left the small circle of family and entered the large group called society. She realizes that she must fight against society if she wants to find a high mode of life, and she must have a self-realization. Self-realization involves a continuous quest for greater understanding both of the self and of its position in relation to others and to society. It involves also an active, actual development and transformation of the self and its relationships, as well associal structure. Its motivation and ultimate direction is the struggle toward a happy and free life. During her search for a self-realization, we can see that the defects caused by society. The hypocrisy of religion, the utilitarian of education and the scientific materialism are all produced by the modern civilization, and the modern civilization is the source of all the evil things. Ursula never lose her courage when she fights against these ugly things. So finally she sees the rainbow-which is a symbol of a happy and free life. The fourth chapter illustrates the ingenious usage of writing techniques . Lawrence is a great innovator in writing, and he creates many Lawrentian writing skills during his short period of life. In The Rainbow, Lawrence implores the rythmic form, the open end and the symbolism, and so on. The rythmic form and the open end are best serviceable to the expression of the theme. The rythmic form makes the whole book is like an opera, and the climax is becoming greater and greater. And at the e...
