The Onomatopoeias & Color Terms And The Translation Full Of Sounds And Colors

It is well-known that there exist a large number of onomatopoeias and colorterms both in Chinese and English literary works. In their literary creations, thewriters, just as the musicians and the painters, describe various things by way oflanguage full of musical and aesthetic perceptions, endowing the described thingswith sounds and colors and making them vivid and lifelike. These descriptions thusbring the readers into a world filled with sounds and colors, striking a responsivechord in the heards of the readers, bringing dynamic and musical enjoyment for them.Thus, the onomatopoeias and the color terms, as an effective rhetoric device and wayof expression, play an important role in both Chinese and English liteary works.Meanwhile, Chinese and English belong to different linguistic systems. Greatdifferences exist in the two languages in spite of the universality of human languages.Hence, there arises the problem of dealing with the onomatopoeias and the colorterms in rendering literare works. To a degree, onomatopoeias and color terms have adirect effect upon the quality of the versions. Therefore, aiming at a good translation,we must consider seriously how to represent the colltent with musical and dynamicsenses of the original. Only in this way can we ensure the readers, in their reading ofthe versions, to get an approximately similar feeling as they do to the original. Thusthe similarity between the original and the version can be gained. For this very reason,the thesis explores the English onomatopoeias and color terms and their translationsfrom the aspects of vocabulary phonetics, grammar and rhetorics. From the origin,constituent, expression, function as well as the symbolic sense of the color terms, thethesis carefully selects examples from the masterpieces of the renowned writers inChinese literary history,makes a comparison of the onomatopoeias and color terms inChinese and English. This thesis also tries to conclude some laws and induces someskills on the translations of the onomatopoeias and color terms, especially fromChinese to English. At the same time, the author also poinis out some inappropriateversions in the selected examples, offering his own translations. Furthermore, thethesis also tentatively probes into some exclamatory onomatopoeias prevalent amongthe adolescence and gives some debatable versions.The conclusions are shown as follows:(l) The onomatopoeias and color terms should be rendered as equivalently aspossible on the basis of the tmiversality of human languages.(2) If there are no proper equivalents, we may translate the onomatOpoeiasthrough avoidance and coinage.(3) Special attention should be paid to the basic and commonly-used color terms.The entity color terms Which open to various usages can be rendered in a nexible way.
