Abstract (A survey of Geography and Figures of the Western Region)is an ancient book related to Xinjiang and complied during Qianlong reigin of Qing dynasty. It made full use of (A survey of Geography of the western Region) and give an account of names of places, mountains, lakes as well as some reluers in the Western Region. It aims at getting unification of translated terms and compre- hending the etymology and implication of proper names. The paper divides into nine sections under three chapters The first chapter is a survey of the western Region, including geographgi- cal situation, the distribution of nationalities and languages, as well as the his- tory authority in the western Region, this is the introduction of this article. The chapter two is the research on (A survey of Geography and Figures of the Western Region) ,includes the introduction of (A survey of Geography and Figures of the Western Region) ,structural analysis of proper names, national relationship and social condictions, reflected in (A survey of Geography and Figures of the Western Region) and the forming regularity and characteristic of name of places in Xinjiang viewing from this anicent book. This is the main part of this essay. Chapter three is the value and imperfections of (A survey of Geography and Figures of the Western Region) The western Region is multinational and multiple language area from the ancient time. What is necessary to say is the western Region mentioned in this article refers to the parochial Western Region ,narnely Xinjiang in history. This paper by making research on the origion of proper names such as name of places, mountains, lakes (Volume 1?) , explounds the migration and 4 integrations of nationalities in ancient Xiniiang. The mutual contant and influ- ence of languages as well as the forming regularties and characteristics of prop- er names in Xinjiang. It also reflects the national relationship and social condi- tion of anicet Xinjiang. In summary, (A survey of Geography and figures of the Western Region)being a reference book of dictionary, includes historical geo- graphical and lingustic content, is a very valuble synthetic document Carrying out the research and arrangement on anicent documents of regional nationality is not olny useful for farther research on local history, geography, Languages and n拁tional relationship but also exert active influence on reinforcing of na- tional unity, defending states unitary ansi strenthing the construction of spiri- tual civilization.
