The paper lays primary emphasis on examining and expounding the interactive relationship between the supplement of The Morning Post, one of the four famous modern supplements during the May 4th period, and the May 4th New Cultural Movement, the specific social change of the time, i.e. how the New Cultural Movement accelerated the birth of the supplement of The Morning Post and how the supplement of The Morning Post conversely promoted the development of the New Cultural Movement. The aim of the study is, on one hand, to give a review of the characteristic style and features at the beginning of 1920抯 when contemporary Chinese social and cultural life centered on the media; on the other, to manifest from one side aspect the important role that the supplement of The Morning Post had played in the early historical stages of Chinese modernization process. As a consequence, a conclusion will be drawn: that is, the results of study, on one hand, provide some practical experiences for the development of the supplement of Chinese newspaper in modern times, on the other, which is considered to be more important, corroborate such a medium theory: the adequate information circulation, esp. the proper employment of mass media can make a great contribution to the social development of a country. The whole paper is made up of three parts. In the introductory part, the author has an examination of how the May 4th New Cultural Movement gave impetus to the birth of the supplement of The Morning Post. In the body part, the author elaborates the contributions made by the supplement to the New Cultural Movement, which consists of three sections:(l) the supplement and ideological emancipation;(2) the supplement and scientific enlightenment;(3) the supplement and the literature revolution. Exactly speaking, in chapter one, in combination with the features of different stages of the New Cultural communication trends and ii MASTER S THESIS individual personalities of different chief editors, the author analyzes and synthesizes the communication rhythm and characteristics manifested by the supplement in the spreading of new trends of thought. In chapter two, the author carefully investigates the significant role of the supplement in the all-around dissemination of science, and discloses the peculiar functions performed by the supplement in the process of science enlightenment and the influences that it exerts on the Chinese social changes. In chapter three, the author elucidates the great effects of the supplement produced by the supplement in pushing forward the emergence and growth of the new literature from the following three perspectives: works, writers, and schools of mass organizations. In the last part, the author reaches a conclusion about the whole paper, further affirming the significance and influences of the supplement of The Morning Post in the historical development of newspapers.
