Some scholars are convinced that translation can be reduced to a change of form, where merely meaning, chiefly the prepositional meaning must be held constant. However, what also should be taken into account are the emotive effect and pragmatic impact of the original text. Therefore, a functional approach should be introduced so as to analyze its linguistic forms, of which two aspects are especially useful in our study of translation, namely, textual function and interpersonal function. That is of great significance in prose translation, where regardless of features in the stylistic dimension, the translated text will be nothing but a betrayer. For this reason, the essay carries out a brief discussion on how to reach textual and interpersonal equivalence in our rendition of prose between English and Chinese.
