The "two women + one man" literary mode is a repeatedly used archetype in modern Chinese literature. It is mainly about, in a single-parents family at the time, the dilemma situation the hero was in due to the conflicts between his mother and his wife, which result in a complete change of the old family order at last.As a literary archetype, the origin of the mode can be traced back into the ancient times. It was a motif of many narrative stories even then. After the "May Fourth Movement" , Chinese writers came to reconsider the concept of "family" and to pay close attention to the women's liberation. This old literary tradition was inherited and once again favored by Chinese writers. They endowed the mode with modern people's spiritual experiences, rearranged and displaced it on the level of emotion, psychology and narrative structure. The " two women + one man" mode has a character of collective unconsciousness. It is a product of sediment and condensation of traditional Chinese culture and group psychology; It is a result of the combination of the culture, society, psychological needs, etc, in a specific historical scene. The mode shows the special experiences and general attitudes and psychological tendencies of Chinese people facing their living space. It also conveys the complex feeling of individuals in the background of a "new" culture and literature. The author has studied the literary works of the 1930's and 1940's as a whole. In my thesis, by combining other scientific search fruits,! will try to inquire into the mode under the framework of archetypal criticism. There are three parts in this article: review of the mode's history, the mode's present development and a cultural reconsideration. All these three parts will be stung together by the clue ofMode Origin-Mode Displacement-Theory Development. The three partsare as following:Part I: Analyze the mode's origin and changes longitudinally from a socio-historical criticism point of view.Part II: Study and summarize the mode's present condition and displacement in modern literature from a framework criticism and sociology point of view.Part III: Discuss the causes of the birth of the mode by using psychoanalysis and socio-psychology methods. Attempt to compare traversally the oriental cultureand the occidental culture to a certain degree. The development of the "two women + one man" mode in modern Chinese literature is a epitome of the dialectical development of Chinese social structure, cultural tradition, and group psychology in the first half of the 20th century. It is of great academic study importance. In addition, the mode widely exists in the modem literature and our daily lives. The exploration of it will surely have a directive and referential function for the solving of the contemporary nuclear families and literature creation problems.
