A Research On English-Chinese Corresponding Words And Terms

5As the development of information era and the rapid spread of internet keep on going, languages using on internet need to be translated enormously.The potential requirement in the research of machine translation and natural language understanding which bring both social and economic benefit have been received great attention.Machine translation has involved multiple knowledges and technology domains in linguistics, computing mathematics, computing technology and artificial intelligence, so it brings difficulty both in research and technology. Current researches have been working deeply to integrate syntactic, semantic and context analysis, or set up semantic and context system to acquire better quality in translation.This paper is based on the idea of example-based machine translation. On the basic research on corresponding words, words list of corresponding word has been created, and how they works in context are discussed.Corresponding word means the linguistic elements of source language and the target language can be translated only one meaning with each other. Corresponding word discussed here includes words, phrases and terms using information technology domain as example.The concept of corresponding word is presented and several types of corresponding word are identified in this paper. Several dictionaries and corpus have been used as reference to discuss corresponding words in quantified and qualitative analysis method for the first time with following results.(1) Based on English-Chinese words list total 40, 308 words from UCDOS system, we use Ciba Kingsoft, English-Chinese Dictionary,Chinese-English Dictionary as reference to find corresponding noun, adjective and verb, with the result 4405,847 and 169 respectively.(2) Based on words list(l) and American Scientific Articles, we use Ciba Kingsoft and Chinese-English Dictionary as reference to find Chinese -English one direction corresponding words total 1106.(3) Based on July 1998 People Daily corpus total 189,185 Chinese characters, phrases have been tagged by manual with the reference of Chinese-English Chinese-French News Dictionary. We find the Chinese-English corresponding phrases total 602.(4) Based on Encyclopedia of Computer Science and Technology and Microcomputer corpus 1999 No.2 total 164,490 Chinese characters, we find corresponding terms of information technology domain total 1693. 1136 terms are from Encyclopedia and 557 terms are from corpus.(5) Based on information technology domain, Microcomputer corpus total 99,615 Chinese characters (2,343 sentences), we check the appearance of corresponding words in context, the outcome is 3729 tokens which is about 6.74% of the whole corpus, two Chinese characters occupy 84.15% of corresponding words in Chinese characters and about 5.68% of the whole corpus.(6) Based on information technology domain, Microcomputer corpus total 99,615 Chinese characters (2,343 sentences), we check the appearance of corresponding terms in context, the outcome is 13,010 Chinese characters (1,682 sentences) which is about 13% of the whole corpus and 71% of the whole sentences.In this paper, we discuss how corresponding words work in polysemy and clear in fuzzy linguistic elements.Due to the limited of time, I feel regret that the research on the function of corresponding words in large-scale corpus cannot be done. I hope to do further research on corresponding words and see how it worksin machine translation or offers a new breakthrough.
