On Fuzziness In Literature And In Translation

Due to the prevalence of fuzziness in language and literary works in particular, the author puts forward the view that the overlapping strategy is to be adopted in the translation of literary fuzziness from the perspective of reception aesthetics. After careful observation, the author finds out that fuzziness can constitute indeterminacies or gaps in literary works, which function as appealing structure. By indeterminacies and gaps, fuzziness provides leeway for the reader's imagination and may further modify the reader's expectation horizon by frustration or defamiliarization.The paper is divided into four chapters. In chapter 1, the author makes a general survey of previous studies. Chapter 2 focuses on the classification of fuzziness on the semantic, syntactic and textual layers. Chapter 3 is a discussion of the aesthetic values of literary fuzziness. In chapter 4, the author advances the view that overlapping of the rendered actual horizon and the reader's expectation is the appropriate translation strategy to be employed in the translation of literary fuzziness. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of the paper. The introduction of reception aesthetics into the discussion hopefully will shed new light on the translation of literary fuzziness.
