Over the last 20 years or so the demand for English courses tailored to specific needs has been growing in China. College students and post-graduate technicians who wish to further their specialized studies through English are anxious to take the training or to buy any books in technical areas. For them if they cannot master scientific English well, they cannot read and write technical writings, and even cannot communicate to others in their fields. The teaching of English for Science and Technology (EST) has been prominence for more than 20 years, and its teaching accounts for a considerable proportion of the teaching of English as a foreign language in China. It is therefore necessary for us to know more about EST.English for Science and Technology is a major sub-division of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and it is a functional varying style. From the point of a register view, we can say that EST is the register of science and technology for modern English. It is a language used by the scientists and technicians in a special situation. This thesis mainly concerns with the characteristics of EST in vocabulary, grammar, discourse and rhetoric by adopting some .linguistic achievements relating to register analysis, language variation and discourse analysis to provide EST students and service English teachers with some guidance on what we should do in learning and teaching of EST.
