| For thousands of years, Chinese people have formed their own thoughts on nature, art and life, as well as the relationship among them. Being the source of Chinese traditional folk culture, these thoughts show the continuity of folk art, people's collectivism in creating folk art and the prescriptive law of human culture going out of natural needs to cultural needs. As an extension and accumulation of people's cognitive ways and results, traditional culture will unavoidably has an important influence on people's cognition and daily activities, meanwhile, it also affects folk aesthetic perception and determines the aesthetic feature. Thus, we can conclude that it is folk culture that influences and dominates (lie creation of folk art and that folk art, being the materialised form of folk culture, embodies the folk aesthetic perception, aesthetic interest and aesthetic standards. It is not only an in separable part of folk culture, hut also the base of all forms of art. Without this base, no art can grow, including royal art, religious art. and modern art design. Just as the old saying goes "the more striking the national feature is, (lie more popular it will be". Viewing from the historic point, there is no water without source. Tiadition is the accumulation of culture, and there will be little development without tradition. It is especially true for modern ail design.Modern art design, the frontier discipline with striking feature ofthe time, has become the mainstream of social culture. Crossing the border of discipline, language and the limit of space and time, and being an important means of communication between man and nature, man and society, man and man, it has a so deep influence on the modern life to the extent that it is regarded as determining people's living quality. During its quick development, many problems arise, such as the loss of national feature in the internationalization, the decline in painting with hand because of the spread of CAD,-etc. Faced with these problems, the author thinks the solutions lie in folk art.Deeply rooted in the daily life, folk art is a pure art, one created, appreciated and used by ordinary people. Rather than the art for art's sake, it is the art of life which involves people's feeling, emotion, customs and ways of thinking. As the product of self-sufficient economy, it has the features of being practical, aesthetic, folk and original. Besides all these mentioned above, folk art is closely related to the nature and reflects the comprehensive feature of Chinese traditional thinking ways which attach importance to summation, perception and discrimination and shows the perfect unity of the physical world and the mental world. The author tries to discuss the in-born relation between folk ail and modern art design from the following aspects:(l)thcy derive from the same source, (2)they share the same moulding technique. (3)folk ail is the base of modern art design, (4)they can be combined together.In this article, the author also analysizes the inspiration of folkart to modern art design from the overall view, from the cognition of nature, and from the design means. The overall inspiration is tlial modern art design should absorb the essence of folk culture, and continue to develop its national feature. With the advance of science, environment is seriously polluted, thus the problem of maintaining a harmonious relation between nature and man becomes more prominent. Viewing from the cognition of nature, folk art, with Chinese traditional culture as its core and an emphasis on the unity of mental and physical world, as well as the oneness of man and nature, provides an inexhaustible treasure-house for modern art design. Hence, it is possible to build up a system of modern art design on the folk art and make folk art continue to develop. On the design means, folk art is also helpful to modern art design.
