This paper is written to set free metaphor from a figure of speech to a figure of thought,to seek new understanding of the nature,structure,and function of metaphor from cognitive perspective,and to provide some reference for English learners to use metaphor as an effective learning tool.With materials collected from common language,business,political and science domain,this paper sets a moment for metaphor's productivity. It is suggested,in the conclusion,that grasping language through metaphor is plausible as well as practical and that concepts such as "metaphorical competence" be introduced into language learning.
