Text linguistics is a branch in the field of linguistics and applied linguistics. It focuses on the languages in use and makes research on how people use languages. These are the same problems that English teachers meet when they design teaching materials and train the students to use English for communication. The teachers apply the theory of text linguistics to English teaching, especially in reading and writing.The thesis includes six chapters. Chapter I is the introduction of the thesis. In this chapter, I discussed the history of text linguistics and the present situation of English teaching of reading and writing in China. In Chapter II, I discussed cohesion and coherence, the most important aspect of the theory of text linguistics. Chapter III is about theme and thematization and Chapter IV is about context. They are two other aspects of the theory. In Chapter V, I discussed the applications of the three aspects in English teaching of reading and writing. Chapter VI is the conclusion of the thesis.Text linguistics has been developing very fast in recent years. By the application of text linguistics theory, many problems in English teaching can be solved. The role of text linguistics theory in English teaching is more and more important.
