| Have you ever thought of the purpose of foreign language learning? What is the use of it to the individual if it is viewed as a procedure of life growth? The thesis is about the cultivation and development of students' intelligence through English listening teaching, in order to prove the fact that foreign language learning helps a lot to the intelligence growth of human brain.Listening is one of the basic useful forms of language communication. The comprehension of utterance is a procedure from the receiving extensive outer utterance to final understanding of the speaker' s expressive motivation. The procedure can be divided into several sections such as pronunciation acknowledges, words recognition, sentence pattern construction and semantic schema and intention inference. Listening comprehension is the active and spontaneous language processing of human brain. The course of listening became popular in 1970s when TOLF1 was introduced in our country. Since then it has been being strengthened gradually.Intelligence can be defined as the ability to understand and learn and make judgments or have opinions that arc based on reason (Procter, 2001). Professor Mr. Wu Fuyuan analyzed critically the intelligence structure of predecessors and concluded that the intelligence consists of three sub-structures, i.e. competence structure (which dominated by inheritance), motivation structure (emotion, will, interest etc.) and cognitive structure. The contemporary English Listening teaching approach mainly includes the combination of bottom-up approach and top-down approach, the strategy-based approach, the interactive approach to teachinglistening, and the listening teaching approach based on schema theory. The traditional teaching approaches are the combination of listening and speaking, listening and reading, listening and writing etc.The thesis attaches importance to the great influence that the contemporary listening teaching and its approaches have made on the cognitive structure of intelligence, such as the power of observation, memory, prediction and creativity. They can also affect attention, emotion, interests and so on, which belong to the other two structures of intelligence. Concretely, the teaching approach of bottom-up that emphasize the recognition and judgment of sound, intonation, sense-group, discourse marker train the student' s observation. While the approach of top-down concentrates on hypothesizing and predicting, which helps develop the competence of the analyzing and predicting of his brain. The strategy-based approach focuses upon the acquisition of the learning strategies, especially, the emotional strategy that is vital in language learning. The interactive approach to teaching listening encourages students to reflect and give their own comments on what they heard, through which, it arouses the students' interests of language learning. The listening teaching approach based on schema theory enriches the students' knowledge and enlarges the students' field of vision, which, in the mean time, is in great demand of the development of students' memory power. In order to bring the active effect of the listening teaching on students' intelligence, we must pay great attention to the listening teaching itself and the application of available approaches. On the one hand, the traditional outmoded teaching thoughts ought to be abandoned and the newly born and proved-to-be-good teaching theory, such as constructivism should be carried out, which is helpful in the cultivating of one of the basic learning competence includesindependence and self-reliance which belong to the motivation structure of intelligence, through the effective direction towards listening teaching practice. On the other hand, the developing of creativity should be conducted through the procedure of English listening teaching based on the combination of contemporary listening teaching approaches and useful section of traditional ones.In short, English listening teaching is not only very important to Englis... |
