Cities are the carrier of human culture and a natural culture medium of literature. As the contemporary main literary form- urban literature serves as an ecological record of city exploration and city interpretation. Wuhan, a famous historic and cultural city in china, enjoys its distinctive cultural connotations and urban characteristics, which men of letters of Wuhan have depicted from different angles and dimensions. The present thesis, against the background of the panorama of modern urban literature, generally describes the urban literary creation in Wuhan. The foreword mainly introduces the developing course of cities and the urban literature, and sketches the characteristics of Chinese cities and urban literature by comparing those of Chinese and foreign cities. The first Chapter deals with the environmental influences- such as Wuhan's history, geographical features and culture patterns, which are the cultural and growing basis for the emergence of Wuhan urban literature. The second and the third Chapters are concerned with the case studies of literature works (mostly novels) of seven representative writers- Pen Jianxin, He Zuohuan, Wei Guangyan, Chi Li, Fang Fang, Du Weizheng, and Hu Fayun, and thus the general features of Wuhan urban literature. Finally, it makes an analysis of some representative urban literary creations of Wuhan writers, and points out the general drawback of Wuhan urban literature.
