In recent years, studies on LLS(language learning strategies) arouse people's great concern. However, systematic empirical studies on VLS(vocabulary learning strategies) in China, especially those taking non-English-major freshmen as subjects, are few. This dissertation is intended to set up a comparatively systematic framework for VLS so as to more completely explore Chinese non-English-major freshmen's VLS use. Seventy-one non-English-major freshmen in three different departments of Chongqing University are the subjects of this study. Through the instruments: questionnaire and V-test paper, this thesis reveals some characteristics of the freshmen's VLS use which are displayed as the following:The frequency of the three broad categories of VLS is: cognitive strategy > metacognitive strategy > social/affective strategy. Only cognitive strategy, as a whole, is comparatively frequently used. The three most frequently used subcategories of VLS are: pronunciation rule> repetition > word-list. The three least frequently used subcategories of VLS are: communicate with native English speakers
