The thesis is an analysis of psychic patterns of Herzog from a perspective of psychology. It is believed by this thesis that anxiety attack caused by lacking self-definition is responsible for Herzog's alienation, from which his ideal constructions followed by the self-contempt result. Although Herzog achieves self-understanding and "faces reality" by self-analysis, his dilemma remains. The thesis consists of four partsThe first part simply introduces the importance of Saul Bellow's Herzog, and provides the critical receptions of the novel in general and of the characterization of Herzog in particular. The second part begins with the general introduction to Horney's psychoanalytic social theory. In the third part the psychic patterns of Herzog are examined after the analyses of the novel. It includes: (1) Herzog's neurotic need of withdrawal.(2) Herzog's ideal constructions of self and of reality.(3) A detailed process of his self-analysis ?transformation.Part four is a conclusion. It concludes that the impersonal and material world results in the unsound personality like Herzog.
